Important Update: Changes to Migri’s Handling of Syrian Asylum Applications!

The Finnish Immigration Service has recently announced major updates concerning asylum applications from Syrian nationals. These changes, which reflect the evolving situation in Syria, are expected to significantly affect current and future asylum and residence processes for Syrians in Finland.

Following the regime change in Syria in December 2024, the security situation remains uncertain. As a result, Migri has decided to temporarily suspend decisions on first-time asylum applications submitted by Syrian citizens. The agency is awaiting updated country-of-origin information to better assess the risks involved in returning individuals to Syria. This means that if you are a Syrian asylum seeker currently waiting for a decision, your application may remain pending for an extended period.

However, not all processing has stopped. Migri continues to process applications for extended and permanent residence permits for those who have already been granted international protection. Additionally, alien’s passport applications and residence permit applications based on family ties—in which protection status must also be reviewed—are still being handled. It is important to understand which processes are affected and which are not, so you can act accordingly.

Another crucial point is that voluntary return to Syria is not currently supported through assisted return programs. While individuals granted international protection can return voluntarily, doing so requires notifying Migri in advance. Once you declare your intent to return, your refugee or subsidiary protection status in Finland will be cancelled, which may have long-term implications for your legal situation and future travel.

In light of these developments, it is strongly advised that Syrians affected by these changes seek professional legal guidance. If your case has been paused or if you’re applying for renewal, permanent residency, or considering voluntary return, the correct legal approach can protect your rights and help you avoid unintended consequences.

We provide tailored legal support to ensure your application or situation is handled properly and strategically under the updated regulations.
