Amendments to family reunification provisions will enter into force on June 2025

Significant changes to Finland’s Aliens Act concerning family reunification will come into effect on 16 June 2025. These amendments introduce stricter requirements that may impact your ability to reunite with family members in Finland. It is crucial to understand these changes and seek professional legal advice to navigate the new regulations effectively.

Key Changes Include:

Age Requirement for Spouses and Partners: Both the sponsor residing in Finland and the spouse or partner applying for a residence permit must be at least 21 years old when the permit becomes valid. This requirement does not apply if the sponsor is a Finnish citizen.

Income Requirement for Family Members: Family members of minors who have been granted subsidiary protection or temporary protection are now required to have sufficient financial resources, with certain exceptions.

Two-Year Residence Requirement: Family reunification for beneficiaries of international protection now requires a two-year residence in Finland, with certain exceptions.

Definition of a Minor: The definition of when a child is considered a minor has been adjusted to comply with the case-law of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Applications submitted before 16 June 2025 and some extended permit applications submitted on or after this date will be processed under the previous provisions of the Aliens Act.
