Finnish Immigration Service to Adjust Income Thresholds for Residence Permits Starting November 1, 2024

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) will introduce new income thresholds for residence permits effective from November 1, 2024. These thresholds represent the minimum income required to support oneself and any family members, and the changes will impact various permit categories, including work-based, study-based, and family-based permits. The income requirements will be adjusted to reflect the rising cost of living, ensuring that permit holders can adequately support themselves while residing in Finland.

The revisions will affect several groups, including those applying for new residence permits and those seeking to extend their existing permits. The new thresholds are designed to be fair and equitable across different permit categories, recognizing that different types of permits have varying financial needs. For example, the income required for family members is calculated based on the number and age of dependents, ensuring that larger families meet appropriate financial standards.

Additionally, Migri is providing detailed guidelines and will update its information to help applicants understand the new requirements. The changes aim to balance the needs of permit holders while ensuring that those residing in Finland can sustain their livelihood without relying on public support. The adjustments are part of the government’s effort to maintain a robust and clear immigration policy.

Current permit holders and those applying after November 1, 2024, are encouraged to review the updated thresholds to ensure they meet the new financial requirements. The aim of these adjustments is to reflect the current economic situation, support the integration of immigrants into Finnish society, and maintain the integrity of the Finnish residence permit system.
